The much anticipated new album from The Maine, American Candy was released yesterday. Known for their progression through their records, this band have been going from strength to strength since the release of Pioneer and of course Forever Halloween. The Maine lately have released two singles which gave a flavour of what was to come, and if they’re anything to go by, this record is going to be one of the highlights of 2015.
There’s not a bad song on this record, not really, if there’s one thing this band do well is melodies, and this is shown throughout the album, shown in tracks like English Girls and My Hair and it really works throughout the record bringing together an amazing collection of songs, that really tie incredibly well together – Colby Wedgeworth has done a fine job at production again like he has done on Pioneer previously, and it makes this record incredibly easy to listen to.
Lyrically, The Maine have had depth, waxing philosophical on recent records and that’s not really changed here, ‘control what you can, confront what you can’t’ is one that stands out, others such as (Un)Lost and 24 Floors continue that theme, however this doesn’t alienate the listener, with some really great choruses in tracks such as Am I Pretty?, Diet Soda Society and Another Night On Mars all are that really are as catchy as hell, it’s a perfect balance between the two this record, and sure will inspire some joining in on tour.
This album is pretty much flawless, well written and well crafted, The Maine are certainly a band who are getting better with age and have an increasing knowledge of what they want to sound like, bringing the best of their records together on American Candy, making it a joy to listen to – I can’t really find a fault with this record, this is a band who know what they want to sound like and make that sound exceptional.
