Live this band on this record sound great, the production really does showcase those strong vocals and the quality of the instrumentalists – this is especially the case with the guitarists throughout this record, from the moment it begins the riffs are really clear and it makes for a great listen, particularly on tracks such as 3rd Crusade.
The writing is great from this band and is on show throughout this album, the band create some excellent grooves and they harmonise excellently with the vocals – with some huge choruses to make a set with, tracks like Late Night Radio, this band create something great at the Belly Up. Keeping it simple on this record certainly makes for a great listen as it really shows what this band do best, keeping the performance a very raw experience for the listener from the start of the album.
Cowboy Junkies create a great live record here and if you like the blues performed live perfectly, Live At The Belly Up is the record for you, as the band play to their best and it shows, with twangy guitars and an edgy vocal that works, it’s certainly worth the suggested tip. The band’s expertise is shown throughout this live album to and it makes for an awesome listen – certainly a band I’d like to see live if this is anything to go by. Highlights for me on this record are Supernatural, Sun Comes Up, It’s Tuesday Morning and Wrong Piano, Wrong Piano really opening this recording brilliantly.
