Straight after playing Slam Dunk, New Years Day played a small show at the Waterfront Studio this week, and I’m very glad they did. The band who recently released their new album Malevolence, brought a massive set of tracks to Norwich and you should have been there – particularly with such great support from locals Young States and Eva Plays Dead.
Local all female rock band, Young States took some time to build their set but with their punchy and energetic riffs on tracks such as No More, it didn’t take them long at all to get going as the band really got into a set with strong riff and big choruses. Finishing their set with Memories which has a great chorus that will get you pulled in, this band are certainly building a solid reputation with great songs and an awesome live sound, and that was certainly on display that night – Passing Time, an older track also sounded good on the night.
Eva Plays Dead burst with energy and that stage just wasn’t big enough for them. The band who really begun getting the crowd moving with huge choruses on tracks such as Fifties Woman, that really display those fantastic vocals that Tiggy Dee has. Taking the stage by storm the band really do have some great tracks in their arsenal, tracks like Easy To Hate are certainly proof of that with such an awesme energy and big hooks, this band certainly are a band that if you like rock and roll, you need to give a listen, Dee was made to lead a band and she proved it once again that night.
New Years Day are a band bursting with personality, and they explode on stage and leave a mess in their wake, and what a wonderful mess it is. Costello’s vocals were sometimes a little drowned out, but she owns a stage and drags in a crowd with such ease that these little things can almost be forgotten. Opening with Kill Or Be Killed which got that crowd with Costello singing along, to other highlights such as I’m About To Break You really made this set such a memorable one.
An incredible show from start to finish, definitely a show where you should have been there.
